Pssssst What is the Patriarchy?
Keep hearing your feminist friends talk about the patriarchy and wondering, what the f*ck is the patriarchy?
Because, seriously?! Who can keep up with all the lingo and messages and slogans that are popping up in droves these days!
And, you know what? That’s a great thing. Female empowerment is spreading so fast we can barely keep up #WATTBA.
You don’t know it all and that’s A okay! Let me tell you a secret, none of us know it all - that’s why the community of us together is vital to our continued success #StrongerTogether
In this article we are going to talk about the patriarchy and why you care about smashing it.
Let’s Talk About The Patriarchy
The dictionary definition:
a system of society or government in which the father or eldest male is head of the family and descent is traced through the male line.
a system of society or government in which men hold the power and women are largely excluded from it.
a society or community organized on patriarchal lines.
plural noun: patriarchies
What does this mean?
It means that the system we live within or beneath (depending on how you perceive it) limits power to men. Intentionally blocking women from having or attaining power.
This can take many different forms of discrimination against women as we’ve seen through history …
Women being sold as property.
Women not being allowed to receive schooling or education.
Women not being able to own property.
Women not being allowed to work or earn wages.
Women not being paid the same amount for the same work as men.
The patriarchy is based on the fallacy that women are less than or not equal to men, hence why power isn’t “given” to women (given in quotes because power isn’t ever given, it’s taken). This is why any person who exhibits traits society views as inherently feminine is viewed as less than.
We (all) need financial means to survive, if women are unable to make their own financial means or enough to survive It creates a systemic subservience of women to men; plainly, women need men to survive.
What a crock of shit system is that?
Capable human needs another capable human to survive because… vagina? Or because of feminine identity/traits? Yeah, makes 0 sense.
The U.S. Today (Read: This sh*t is still happening)
Recently, we celebrated Equal Pay Day, a day dedicated to spotlighting and closing the gap between men and women’s earnings.
As of 2016, women still make less than a man makes for the same job.
But that’s not the end of the story, different women live at different socioeconomic levels in the U.S. White women make more than Black women and Black women make more than Latina women (Source: https://iwpr.org/issue/employment-education-economic-change/pay-equity-discrimination/)
You’ve probably heard someone say that the wage gap is a myth (I know I have). If you listen, most of the arguments aren’t about facts or statistics, they are about placing the blame on women for not rising higher. For example, women don’t know how to ask for money, women don’t take high-level executive jobs, women don’t major in careers that make high-end salaries - notice how all of these reasons point back to women not being as good as men? Because if women did better they’d make more?
I can’t tell you what to believe, my suggestion is to look it up and do your own math (you always should).
I can tell you from my extensive research that as of 2016, women are the majority of college graduates as well as entrepreneurs in the U.S. But, still the minority in receiving small business loans/funding/investors, the minority in holding executive positions, and somehow not doing quite enough to make equal to men. But, again, do the research and make your own conclusions.
Down with the Men (Read: Feminists hate men)
Isn’t that why we are smashing the patriarchy? Because feminists hate men?
No! Not at all.
That couldn’t be further from the truth. Darling, I am a feminist through and through and I love men. I love the men in my circle now and the ones to come in the future.
It’s about understanding that diversity makes us better. It makes our communities more vibrant and our lives more full.
Any feminist who wants to see another group of people oppressed is no friends of yours or anyone's for that matter. And while we are on the subject of oppression, this spans far past feminism - any human who wants to see another group of humans oppressed based on their age, race, gender or sexual orientation is bad news.
But Aren’t Men Part of the Problem?
Some of them are. And, some women are. Some humans are part of the problem and some are part of the solution.
Sidenote: We do hate 45, but, not because he is a man. Because he is a garbage human who enjoys belittling, harming and oppressing other humans, notably women. He just happens to be male.
What are we fighting against/for?
In short, we are fighting against oppression and for equal opportunities. Feminists, like me and hopefully you, want equal opportunity for ourselves (because we live in systemic oppression) and other people (because feminism includes everyone).
We are working for a world where people aren’t denied opportunities based on preconceived notions on them based on their appearance or identifying factors, like race and gender.
That’s why we want to smash the patriarchy.
The patriarchy is a system that purposely oppresses a group of people based on gender and getting paid less money because I am female is just ridiculous!
